What Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak are doing with Silk Sonic now, Luke McMaster was doing all the way back in 2008 on his forthcoming release TIME, a collection of classic soul inspired songs by the new champion of blue-eyed soul in Canada.
The hit songwriter (Rihanna, Nick Lachey) crafted brand-new treasures in that classic sound with legends Lamont Dozier of Motown and Rascal's founder and front man, Felix Cavaliere on the Icons of Soul album (2018). He celebrated the writer of "My Girl" and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" on Songs of Smokey (2020). Robinson himself shouted out “Check out @lukemcmaster’s cover of my song ‘Ooh Baby Baby,’ to his 1,000,000-plus followers on socials adding “Amazing job, Luke!” Luke's single "Good Morning Beautiful," went to #3 hit on the Billboard AC chart, and "Raise A Glass" lands in the top 10 of the Billboard holiday charts every holiday season since its release in 2018. Both are collaborations with new age piano sensation Jim Brickman.
Given it's throwback style, it is somewhat ironic that Time was ahead of its time. Boxed in by a label looking for a modern pop sound, McMaster refused to compromise in 2008 and the album was shelved. Now, with the blessing of legends like Smokey Robinson and Lamont Dozier, and bands like Silk Sonic kicking down the door it's finally "time" for Luke McMaster to walk through it.
